The Magdalene Circle was created in 2017 to bring together women of faith, across generations and committed to collective social impact, through a sustained investment in servant leadership. We draw inspiration from St. Mary Magdalene – once discredited, now celebrated as the first person to whom the resurrected Christ appeared and proclaim the good news to the earliest disciples. “Apostle to the Apostles,” Mary of Magdala symbolizes the importance of the female voice in the global Church community. Over the years, more than 50 women have joined in this effort, generating more than $600,000 in support of young people and the mission of Goodfaith.
Every year, the Circle convenes to break bread and hear from a leading female voice in the Church. Past speakers have included Kerry Robinson (President and CEO, Catholic Charities USA), Sr. Christine Schenk (historian and Church reformist), Sr. Norma Pimentel (immigration activist), Sr. Helen Prejean (author of Dead Man Walking and River of Fire), Olga Segura (author of Birth of a Movement: Black Lives Matter and the Catholic Church), Ellie Hidalgo (Co-Director of Discerning Deacons), and Dr. Carolyn Woo (retired CEO of Catholic Relief Services).
This year’s gathering took place on November 23rd and featured Joan Neal, Deputy Executive Director and Chief Equity Officer of NETWORK Advocates for Social Justice. Grounded in Gospel values and the Catholic social justice tradition, NETWORK transforms society by shaping federal policies that achieve racial, economic, and social justice; serve the common good; and honor the dignity of all.
The presentation centered on hope in the wake of another contentious election season and addressed audience questions on topics relevant to Catholic social teaching. Many guests expressed particular concern for immigrants under the threat of mass deportation.
Despite some somber moments, one guest commented “Thanks for today! I needed to be among friends and connect with community.” The Magdalene Circle serves to foster this by providing access to thought leaders, facilitating in-person and virtual events, and nurturing friendships around shared common values.
The Magdalene Circle is always growing and ever-evolving. If you are a woman of faith, consider joining us! Email Stephanie Peddicord for more information: [email protected].
